A study published online Thursday in the International Journal of Sexual Medicine shows that a single daily dose of the drug, tadalafil, can help treat erectile dysfunction by improving blood flow to the penis, helping men to achieve and maintain a firm erection.

Researchers said the drug can significantly improve the effects of sexual arousal in patients with erectile dysfunction and can help men with ED to achieve and maintain a firm erection.
Tadalafil, the active ingredient in the popular drug, has been available since 1998 and has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
But the study showed that tadalafil, the main ingredient in the drug, can help men with ED get an erection, which is the time when blood flow is reduced.
“The results of this study show that tadalafil, the active ingredient in the brand-name Levitra, can significantly improve blood flow to the penis and help men to achieve and maintain an erection,” said Dr. Yury M. Levitra, chief executive officer of Levitra.
The researchers, however, believe the drug could improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction in some men, such as difficulty reaching the muscles of the penis, and may even improve the condition.
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Vardenafil, is approved by the FDA for the treatment of ED.
The drug was developed by Dr. Levitra and was tested and approved by the FDA in 2003.

In the study, researchers randomly assigned men to take 20 mg, 20 mg, or 10 mg of tadalafil (10 mg daily) or placebo tablets in either one or two doses, for three weeks.
The researchers also studied the effect of tadalafil on the level of nitric oxide in the blood, which is a chemical in the body that acts as a vasodilator.
A placebo treatment, which contains no drug, did not produce any changes in the levels of nitric oxide in the blood, which could make the drug less effective.
“This is not a placebo effect,” said Dr.
Levitra’s patent for tadalafil is owned by Pfizer Inc.
In addition, Levitra was the first drug to carry the FDA’s list of medications for erectile dysfunction. A Pfizer subsidiary in Singapore recently launched Levitra, a popular treatment for ED.
The drug, which has also been used by more than 100 million men worldwide, was developed by Pfizer and approved by the FDA in 2003. Viagra, which was approved by the FDA in 1998, was a first-generation drug.
